The People's Portfolio Inaugural Fundraiser
On September 21, 2017, The People’s Portfolio honored Congolese doctor and nine-time Nobel Peace Prize nominee, Denis Mukwege, presenting him with our first annual award for Inspiring Leadership. The People’s Portfolio is helping to amplify Dr. Mukwege’s voice and powerful message at a time of crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
The event took place at the home of philanthropists George and Elsa Sykes in New Canaan, Connecticut. Joining The People’s Portfolio to honor Dr. Mukwege and present the award were actress Robin Wright and advocate Dr. Jill Biden. Both women have visited Dr. Mukwege’s Panzi Hospital and are staunch supporters of his crusade to help victims of sexual violence. Platon presented The People’s Portfolio’s work in the Congo and the need for global attention to address the crisis.
Funds raised will help The People’s Portfolio continue its efforts to shine a light on emerging leaders such as Dr. Mukwege. Part of the proceeds have been allocated to the Panzi Hospital.
